In my ideas for "Family Swap" the reason why Lili takes the situations thrown at her so much harder than Raz does in canon is because Raz was used to throwing himself between death's jaws with his acrobatics, while Lili was just a kid in the city who liked candles in "Family Swap."

Ft. Mikhail, Chloe, Maloof, and Truman Zanotto!

The bit with Truman is a bit of backstory. An explanation for why Q doesn't show up in the second game (not that I needed one, but I like to fit my OCs into existing stories when I can).

The reason why Q wasn't at the Motherlobe is because he had left with his old mentor for a chance at furthering his career as a Psychonaut. However, his mentor had "accidentally" let slip his identity as a trans man in the wrong company, which put him at high risk. Truman wanted to recover him sooner, but the whole deal with being kidnapped and his brain being swapped out for Gristol's put it off a bit longer than he intended, but never fear! Q was recovered shortly after all that was settled (along with his old mentor and a couple of other Psychonauts being fired for discrimination and unjust treatment). Unfortunately, it does mean he's still technically an intern, and he's in need of a new mentor.

Anyways, enough of that, meet Q's parents, Albert and Kristall! Both of them work for the Psychonauts.

Albert is one of Compton Boole's kids. Not only is he gifted with Zoolinguism, like his father, but he had spontaneously developed enhanced strength (hence why he's fkkn T H I C C). He's got a boisterous way of speaking, which is actually quite entertaining to listen to. Great at story-telling, and will often use Projection to aid in the stories. He loves his family (although some, he's not too happy with), and he especially loves his wife and his son. Albert wears gloves because of sensory issues.

Kristall is a Grulovian woman with no relation to Raz's family. When she was a young girl, she suffered a mysterious accident that replaced her eyes with pure crystal and left her blind. She's only ever told Albert what exactly had happened to her, but she says she'll tell Q when he's older (although he's insisted many times that he's quite old enough, thank you very much). Kristall is gifted with Geokinesis and Clairvoyance, although the latter was more out of necessity since she needed to see. Quite a bit unhinged, but very loving and endearing. She likes to crochet, and she was the one that made Q his sweater.

Both were a little thrown off when Q started identifying as a boy (mainly because he was so young when he did), but they're very supportive of him and try to help him as much as they can. Unfortunately, being Psychonauts with specialized powers (especially Kristall), they're sent out on missions quite often and are unable to give Q the attention that he needs. They always try to spend what little free time they have with him, call as often as they can, and make sure to send plenty of packages and letters to him.

They are. So close to retiring early just so they can spend what remains of Q's teenage years with him.

Well, this is it! The final chapter of the Psychoborrower series! This was such an amazing journey, and I’m glad I saw it through to the end. I definitely wanna write more for this universe, though I think I’ll take a little break for a bit. I’ve been dying to replay the first Psychonauts haha.

Epilogue

The next day truly was the calm after the storm. Truman and Gristol’s minds had been successfully swapped back, and Helmut’s brain was put into one of those brain hamster balls for the time being.

It would take some time for Truman to fully recover, but he seemed to be doing well considering everything he’d been through. Having Lili around definitely helped.

As for Gristol, he was locked up in Psychoisolation. Technically, a regular jail cell would have done just fine since he doesn’t have any psychic powers that we would need to suppress, but the Psychonauts opted not to turn him over to the authorities in order to protect Lucrecia. Though, if it were up to me, I’d have him locked up in a giant birdcage.

That afternoon, Hollis gathered everyone in the classroom, telling us she had an important announcement to make.

“I would first like to apologize for the things you interns have seen over the past few days. It was my responsibility to ensure your safety amidst the chaos. But… I think there’s something to learn from all of this. There are flaws in our organization, and in ourselves. In order to move forward, we have to address them. Only then can we properly help each other to grow. The goal of the Psychonauts is and always has been to help people work through their issues. And all of us here have seen you doing exactly that. So, it is my pleasure to officially welcome a new generation of agents to the team. Razputin Aquato, Samantha Boole, Lauren Forsythe, Adam Joseph Gette, Flint Loveseat, Morris Martinez, Elizabeth Natividad, Norma Natividad, and Gisu Nerumen. You are now… Junior Psychonauts!”

Everyone gave us a round of applause, and we all cheered in celebration. Well, almost all of us. Norma was somewhat offended by the “Junior” part of it, but what was she expecting? At the end of the day, we were still kids. Besides, she was one of the older interns, so it would only be about a year or so before she turned 18 and got promoted to a full on adult Psychonaut. But hey, that’s just typical Norma.

We all got our badges, and we were then free to roam around HQ as we pleased. Raz and I took that opportunity to check up on everyone.

With Truman back in charge, Hollis didn’t hesitate to take a two week vacation. Of course, Lori went along with her. She was particularly excited since her dad would be going with them as well, and it had been a while since she’d seen him due to spending most of her time at the Motherlobe. Had to appreciate the fact that Hollis’ husband was on board with her impulsively taking in a psychic borrower child, no questions asked.

She also decided to let the Aquatos stay, since Frazie was a big help in taking down Maligula, and she also heard about how Augustus helped us back at camp. I was 100% on board with that decision, since I knew Mom and Dad would be staying with them. The last thing I needed was to be separated from my family again. Or my potential girlfriend.

Raz and I finally got to talk to the real Truman for the first time. He seemed to like Raz, much to his relief, though he did express concern over Lili kissing boys at summer camp, so we left that part out. And he definitely couldn’t find out about the brain kissing. Any sane person would find that gross.

With his alcoholism under control, Bob was welcomed back into the Psychonauts, and he and Helmut were hard at work planning the mission to retrieve his body from Grulovia. Helmut was confident he’d be able to locate his own body, and I couldn’t wait to actually see him in person. He also offered to let me have his brain’s tiny Viking helmet once he got his body back. I’d have to wash the brain juice off of it first, though.

We eventually made our way to the bowling alley, where we met Sasha and Milla.

“Heh… too bad my internship’s over. Kinda wish I got to work with you a little bit longer.”

“You still can, Flint. It will just be as a fellow agent.”

“That’s true. And… I thought about what you said before. About figuring out what being a Psychonaut means to me. I’m still not really sure, to be honest. I know I wanna help people, but that’s kind of vague. I thought this whole mission would give me a definitive answer, but I still don’t know.”

“I wasn’t expecting you to find an answer right away. It takes time to figure out what exactly it is that drives you to be a Psychonaut. But, I do have an offer for you of something you might be interested in. Don’t feel obligated to join us if you need a break, though. I know you’ve been through a lot these past few days.”

I smirked. “Whatcha got?”

“I’ve been in contact with Sheegor, since she’s been watching over Whispering Rock for us, and she’s spotted a few psychic borrower children. We instructed her not to confront them directly, but she’s kept watch over them for the time being. It sounds like word spread of your heroism at camp, and it inspired these kids to follow in your footsteps. But they’re still not comfortable interacting with humans. We figured we could train them the same way we trained you, but seeing as you’re a Junior Psychonaut now… how would you like to be a junior counselor for the rest of the summer, Flint?”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Other kids were inspired by me? And Sasha and Milla wanted me to help train them?

“That… That sounds amazing! I’d love to!”

It was only after I said it that I realized what going back to camp would actually mean.

“Wait, I can’t. I can’t leave my Mom again.”

Milla nodded. “That’s okay. We understand, darling.”

I could tell she and Sasha were somewhat disappointed, and I really did want to go, but it didn’t feel right to leave.

Raz could also tell I was conflicted, and suggested we talk to my Mom about it. I was hesitant to even float the idea of leaving at the risk of upsetting her, but bottling up how I felt wouldn’t be good either.

Before we left the Motherlobe, we heard a crash as we passed Sasha’s lab, and stopped in there to investigate. Dr. Loboto was in the process of squeezing himself into the Otto B.O.N. tube system. He told us he was escaping back to Whispering Rock, since he left his kid there.

He was already gone before we could ask any further questions. Absolutely wild that he had a kid at Whispering Rock the whole time, and he still went through with stealing everyone’s brains. Then again, that was before his moral compass was restored. The real question was which kid was his. My money’s on Bobby Zilch.

This felt like another sign pushing me to go with Sasha and Milla, but I still wanted to talk to Mom first.

We went over to the campsite. Mom was nowhere to be found, but Dad was sitting in the grass beside Mirtala, listening attentively as Frazie went over a chart she made of the updated Aquato family tree.

“Okay, so the Galochios never cursed us, and both our Grandma Marona and Nona actually came from that family, meaning we have Galochio blood.”

“So wait, which one is our grandmother again?”

“Marona. Nona is actually our great aunt, but she raised Dad in place of Marona after she died, so as far as we knew growing up, she was our grandmother.”

“Okay… and she’s dating the bacon man, so does that make him our grandpa?”

“No, let me start again.”

“Actually, before you do that, can you explain where Sibi fits into all of this? I’m very out of the loop.”

Frazie looked over at me and Raz, frustrated and exhausted.

“You guys wanna take this?”

Raz shook his head, and I turned my attention to Dad.

“I can tell you the stuff about Mom later, though I think it would be better if she explained it herself. Where is she, by the way?”

He sighed. “Not sure. She and Augustus have been gone all morning. I’m sure they have a lot to talk about. I just… wish I knew more about this beforehand. Your mother and I have been together for so long, but there are so many things she never told me. Though, I guess I can’t blame her. A lot of it was horribly traumatic for her, and she probably didn’t want to revisit it.”

Mom didn’t realize that hiding her past wasn’t just hurting her, but Dad and I too. There were things she did in the past that still hurt me, even after everything I learned. But people aren’t all good or all bad. Mom’s complicated. I’m complicated. And that’s okay. At least now we know we can work through it together.

Donatella directed us to the waterfall, explaining that Augustus liked to go to high up places to think about things. Sure enough, up on the cliffs, we found him sitting and watching the reverse waterfall, with Mom on his shoulder.

“Hey… how are you two holding up?”

“The best we can. This is just a lot to process.”

Augustus also had very complicated feelings, specifically towards Lucrecia. It hurt him to realize he’d been living a lie, but at the same time, he couldn’t really resent her, as her mind had also been altered. He admitted that he wasn’t happy with Ford, to say the least, but he wasn’t going to confront him any further, seeing how much he also suffered from the ordeal. After all, Ford destroyed his own mind just to forget about everything that he went through.

“I just wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t opened the door for that man from the orphanage. At least then we wouldn’t have been separated, and you wouldn’t have ended up with that awful family.”

“Don’t blame yourself for that, Gus. We were kids, and you had just been told your parents died. None of us knew what would end up happening.”

He sighed. “I know. But I promised to protect you.”

Mom let out a slight chuckle. “You know, I’m a lot tougher than I look. And I gave that Gristol kid a hell of a time while he had me trapped. But… I am glad to have you back. We can look after each other now. And our families.”

They both got quiet, and I knew I had to ask. I wasn’t sure how soon Sasha and Milla were planning on leaving, so I had to get an answer.

“Hey, Mom? Sasha and Milla asked me to go back to camp with them to help train some new borrower kids. I really wanna go, but I’ll stay if you’re not okay with it. I know you just got me back and everything, so I understand if you want me to stay here. A-Actually, now that I’m saying it out loud, yeah, I shouldn’t go, I don’t wanna leave you again.”

She smiled warmly, signaling for Augustus to bring her closer to me.

“Go ahead. Do what you need to do.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. I’ll be alright here. We have a lot to work out, but I won’t hold you back. After all, you’re a Psychonaut now.”

I jumped over to her, tackling her with a hug.

“Thanks, Mom. And I’ll be back when the summer’s over. I’m sure I’ll have a ton of new stories to tell. Maybe some new pictures to add to the scrapbook.”

“I’d like that. Now go, before you miss your flight.”

Raz took me back to the Motherlobe, briefly stopping so I could say my goodbyes to Dad and Frazie, and we met Sasha, Milla, and Coach at the jet.

“Hey! Got room for one more?”

Sasha and Milla exchanged a glance, smiling, while Coach ran over to pick me up.

“Knew you’d come around, soldier! Glad to have you back on the team!”

Raz smiled, though I could tell he was a bit sad. I knew I was gonna miss him, even if we ultimately wouldn’t be apart for that long in the grand scheme of things. Still, we’d been through so much together. He was my best friend. My Gus.

“Don’t just stand there, man. Bring it in.”

He briefly took me back from Coach, hugging me to his chest.

“You’re gonna do great at camp. After all, those kids are learning from the best.”

He passed me back to Coach, and Sasha and Milla boarded the jet. I took one final look at Raz, waving goodbye.

“I’ll see ya in the fall!”

We got onto the plane, and Coach deposited me on Sasha’s shoulder so he could use the bathroom. Again.

Once everyone was seated, we took off, the Motherlobe slowly disappearing in the distance. It was tough to say goodbye, but I knew in my heart that everyone and everything would be right there when I returned.

Sasha and Milla were both very quiet the first few minutes or so. I think they knew I was still processing a lot of what happened. After a while, Sasha broke the silence.

“A bit strange to be going back to camp after all this, isn’t it?”

“Sort of. Though, I guess it isn’t that weird since I’ve been living there the past three years.”

“In any case, do let us know if you need help with anything.”

“Heh, of course. And this time, you don’t have to hide the fact that you’re helping me.”

We got quiet again for a while, until Milla spoke up.

“Sasha and I heard from the other agents about how you and Raz helped them. They didn’t go into full detail, though. I’m curious to hear about what you two did out in the field.”

So, for the rest of that flight, I told my story. It was a long one, but it lasted the entire trip. The whole time, they stayed invested. It felt amazing to have these two professional agents take interest in my exploits, and it was at that moment that it really, truly felt like I was one of them.

From that day on, I was proud to know that I was one of the first borrowers to become a Psychonaut. And I knew there would be many more to come. Those kids at camp were living proof of it.

It would be a long way to go for us to feel fully secure with being in the public eye, so until then, we still had to be kept a secret. But among the psychic community, we would be recognized as the butt-kicking agents we truly were.

I wasn’t just a Psychonaut. I was a Psychoborrower.

Tell us about your baby!: She's the testtube biological baby of Sir Hammerlock & Wainwright Jakobs (which basically means she could aim and shoot a pistol at the age of 4) and has 4 siblings (one of which is also an oc, but is an adoptive kid, and the rest are canon characters who got adopted). She has a big plushie collection (some knitted or sewn by Wainwright, some crocheted by Hammerlock, some being gifts from extended family or the Crimson raiders) and also fucked up eldritch powers beyond human comprehension bc her parents are abominations from beyond the veil (my Borderlands rewrite AU is a mess haha) which she primarily uses to teleport all over the house, causing an understandable amount of problems. Clay is her weird uncle and she loves him. She's kinda based off Wednesday Addams because autism. Also she is autistic, the nicest weirdgirl on Eden-6, swears an unusual amount for a 5 year old (being around Wainwright del Frisco Jakobs-Hammerlock will do that to you) and often swaps between her Edenian (space southern) and her Hermesian (space british) accents bc yknow. Just listen to her dads speak and you'll see.

sawyer hale is a kid who had a pretty hard knock life in a cyberpunk dystopia city. after deciding his dad kinda sucked, sawyer ran away and emancipated himself at 16 and moved into a different, nicer city and became a hermit for a while. afterwards, he proceeded to save the world twice; once he saved a cyberworld from the big bad capitalists and second he saved the universe from collapsing via terrible creature. as he goes through these adventures he learns how to be comfortable and happy with himself again.

also he destroyed his dad when he possessed a robot body. go kid!!

sawyer super loves tech but he gave it up for a while because Shitty Dad Ruining It For Him, but he eventually finds his passion again and makes phenomenal inventions. also he is the embodiment of Baby because all the adults around him want to scoop him up and carry him around for being a little issues boy with issues. they love singing and the arts in general, and they're very open-minded, which makes them a pretty good friend.

oh yeah all his adventures kinda messed up his biology so he's partially made of code now. and also has wings made of code. he can design them however he wants like retexturing game assets. YIPPIE!

Brain wanted to share some future camper headcannons

Phoebe and Quentin co-own a record shop

Phoebe is also a part time Psycho-Therapist when she’s not working at said shop (they swap shifts each month)

It’s in California, it’s called Psyche Records (Quentin named it)

Phoebe worked with Sasha for a little while working on brains (about four months) before deciding to break of from the whole Psychonaut thing and just follow her own path

Kitty and Frankie live in Los Angeles together, their dating

Their apartment is quite fancy (thanks to kitty’s dad)

They still work for the Psychonauts, but Frankie is a part time mechanic (works with Chloe when she’s at the motherlobe)

Elka lives not so far away, she’s still anxious as fuck but is also a raging lesbian

Her visions got worse with age so she decided to move closer to people she trusted

J.T works on his family’s farm in Texas when he’s not on missions

Coach was his mentor (I’d say a few months after sam? They did meet!)

AITA for trying to restore my country to its former glory?

I (32M) am the righteous heir to a country the psychonauts destroyed (12M at the time). My family was driven into exile by them, and we had to spend our lives running until we reached shelter in the lucktopus casino, going from a comfortable life to literal squalor. My father (60M at the time, now dead) told me that the protector of our great nation was still alive and being held hostage by the psychonauts, so I bravely infiltrated their headquarters, worked as their mail clerk for a few years while enacting my plan in the background. I managed to swap my brain with that of the grand head and got one of their child workers to put ford cruller's brain back together so he could get Maligula out. Everything went perfectly, and I almost managed to place the blame on the child, but him and the other idiot kids they hire went into her mind and ruined EVERYTHING. I believe I'm in the right, but I'm currently being held in psychoisolation like a zoo animal because it was "illegal" and I "retraumatized multiple families". AITA?

I wanted to ask what's your opinion on some popular psychonauts HCs? Are there any you'd like to talk about or some of your own you'd like to share?

Hmm popular Psychonauts HCs...

Okay so I know that a lot of the cast are headcanoned as queer and I'm totally fine with that. I really enjoy the different headcanons around that and seeing what kinds of interactions come from that. Even ones I don't believe in, like Genderfluid!Dion (I get more toxic masculinity vibes from him, Augustus, and Raz) and Transmasc!Lili. I've seen a few that I promptly disagree with, but I usually ignore the people who try to focus on that headcanon.

I'm a fan of the post that my mutual @sweetstwawbewwymilk created, which is Archetypes = what you need, Raz's Archetype = friend. Which I like to see people use that when making swap AU archetypes (Callisto and Raccoon!Lili my beloveds).

I love the idea of the adult friendships between Augustus, Dona, Truman, Milla, Sasha, and Hollis. They're like a clan of parents.

I really like the headcanons of Lili's links to her family being used in the past, particularly by Kitty and Franke cause they're older and Kitty is canonically manipulative. Mainly because not only does that flesh out the interaction she and Raz have at the lodge, but some campster interactions show other friendships...

Or the bittersweetness of "we still think of the good times with you, even if we used you."

Context- this is the kid that hacked into Lili's profile and took pictures of her without permission. At the very least, Franke still cares about Lili and I CHERISH that information.

I see the headcanons about the counselor stuff being thankless and a lot of the art that's about like... the irritation with the campers. But I think Raz actually SIGNS UP to be a counselor regularly. Like, I think Coach Oleander is a permanent counselor (so he keeps the Coach title instead of being called Morceau), but I think when Coach is all tired from that, Raz steps up as the next perma-counselor. Raz also teaches "Mental Gymnastics" in his mind, and encourages kids to use all the tricks in their arsenal to get around certain areas. His mind does change a bit because of this, having a little training area that combines circus stuff as well as things like roof-top running missions in Raz's memory to be an obstacle course for the other kids to run through.

I like to think Lili's mom is actually very similar to Raz. I think that while Truman took to being the Grand Head a few years after Otto, Lili's mom was ready to go on these fantastic world traveling adventures and fight people. I think she's the one who has the ability of pyrokinesis as her specialty, and she was all for Truman bringing psychics to fight bad guys.

I think Psychonauts takes place in the "futuristic" 2000s. You know, like those vibes that Back to the Future 2 gives with traveling forwards in time to 2012 that also has a lot of the similar culture of the time it was written. Some time where science stuff took advantage of how fast psychics could work and thus got further than today's world while still having things like: "have you heard of the new GameBoy Advanced? So cool."

I think that psychics actually get stronger the further down the line they come from. So Augustus is pretty strong (able to astral project without a Psi-portal, bash his psychic abilities against Raz's defenses, and psi-blast) and has a few abilities he can't really learn (tries to learn pyrokinesis, but I think he has that mental block + affinity for water). This is also true for Truman and Lili.

All of the Zanotto family have an affinity for music. Bob had a recital that he needed to go to during a time his mother was in the garden... the Zanotto family music box... Helmut married into the family (Fullbear-Zanotto is his legal last name)... I think that Truman and Lili enjoy singing to their plants. Also I love the idea that Lili can sing both death metal (cause plants apparently grow best around death metal) and opera (slightly taught from Helmut's knowledge of singing, cause there's no way that PsychOdessey isn't an opera in my mind).

This is a crack headcanon that I don't really believe, but I want to write: Lili has a synesthesia where she can taste emotions. Love tastes like citrus soda. Sadness tastes like sashimi. Irritation tastes like spicy chicken nuggets.

How different are the Aquato Family in your swap au?

* Literally just think the absolute opposite of the Canon Aquatos. All of them are psychic and embrace it, they were the ones to start the development of the Psychonauts organization, the hand of Galochio is a friend, etc. The only thing I haven’t changed is the fact they’re acrobats because Marona and Lazarus are still alive here to keep the circus ruining, which is kinda like a second job or family hobby to them in case the psychonauts thing doesn’t work out after all

Everytime I join a fandom the first thing that shows up is an AU. Speaking of aus. What is the family swap au?

Hello, new person!! I'm not the creator of that au (that credit goes to @sxrrandomfanfics who has a lovely explanation of it) but it's one of my favorites to read about, so I can actually explain that one pretty well.

The main idea is swapping what happens to the Aquatos and the Zanottos. In canon, Bob Zanotto watches his husband die at the hands of Lucrecia Mux. Lucy is taken to the astrolathe by Ford, and he makes her believe that she's her dead sister, Marona Aquato, and makes her nephew, Augustus, believe that this is his mother. They go on with a heavy fear of water, even though that's their specialty, until Razputin Aquato runs away to Whispering Rock.

In this au, Lucy watches Ford die at the hands of Bob. Helmut takes his husband to the astrolathe, and removes his memories of what happened in Grulovia and with his psychic abilities, and Truman grows up with a heavy fear of plant life because of it until Lili runs away to Whispering Rock.

My own personal thoughts about it include a desperate need for the first scene between Helmut and Bob (I imagine Bob and Truman both arriving at camp because Lili's all they have now) and Bob just staring at Helmut because he vaguely recognizes him, even though Helmut's tried to bury the memory of each other for both of them. Because boy, these dudes are GAY. And I love that for them. Because I'm also gay.

Role reversal psychonauts AU? Just an idea or two.

Raz reads horror comics too often, much to the chagrin of his family. One of them is True Psycho Tales, a story about the group of villains known as the Psychonauts, who use their powers to make ill-gotten gains, An underground group of non-psychics plan their defeat. Gristol Malik is the head of the Thorney Towers Home of the Defiance.

Psychoswap: The Interns

At last, these are all done! Sorry they're all just kinda standing there. If I had to draw poses this would take even longer!

I do hope my handwriting is legible. First up we have Lucy! She ran away from her family and now is caught up in a whole mess of a Psychonauts mission! It's really cool and really stressful at the same time! She's 14 because I tried to put her in between the ages of canon Raz and the canon interns. Lucy comes from a family of dancers, and is a good enough gymnast that it makes up for her remedial skill level with psychic things.

Next up we have Ford and Otto! They were the first two Lucy met at camp. Lucy had to rescue Ford from getting his brains stolen, and they've been dating ever since. Ford is strangely talented at teleportation, which is an uncommon skill to have, especially someone so young. He's learning, but when he first started teleporting he would get stuck in trees like a cat.

Otto! Canon Otto's depression machine is hilarious to me so he has it here now too. He's the oldest of all the interns and he won't let anyone forget that! But that also means he feels responsible for all of them. Even if he's the oldest by only a few months. While his specialty is electrokinesis, he isn't very strong. He makes up for it by building devices. He's working on that hoverboard right now. If only he would stop falling off.

Bob and Helmut! Bob is the nephew of the Grand Head of the Psychonauts, but he only joined the intern program recently. Why? Well, he felt responsible for his mom. His older sibling was already far away, and he was the only one taking care of her and the house. But finally, he did come to stay at the Motherlobe. It's not like he lives that far away anyway. He's glad he came though, as now he has a bunch of friends and also. Helmut. Oh he has the biggest crush on him, but is way to nervous to admit it.

Helmut for sure also has a crush on Bob. But again, too nervous to admit it! When will these two finally admit their feelings for each other? Helmut wants to see how music can effect psychic powers, and also psychic plants. That last part totally isn't an excuse to hang out with Bob! Also bending the laws of time is just a side hobby of his. But it would take a significant event for him to actually learn how to slow down time. That stuff is complicated.

Bob isn't the only one with family in the Psychonauts. There's also Compton, who has both a famous agent and one of the founders as relatives. There's a lot of expectations placed on his shoulders, and it's causing him a lot of anxiety. Lucky for him, his friends are always there to make up excuses to get him out of those types of situations. He likes to sew, he even sewed tinfoil into his hat. It may seem silly, but it really does help keep out all the voices.

And finally, Cassie. Cassie's specialty is actually projection, but she hasn't told anyone except for Compton. No ones ever taught her how to deal with projections, no one even told her it existed! So when she accidentally summoned a paper "her" out of nowhere, it was a shock. She also really likes to read. She hangs out with Compton at least once a week and they read together and eat whatever snacks Compton cooked that week. Bob is there sometimes too! Her favorite animals are bees as well as cats by the way, and the psychic bees are something she's trying to study. Also, every day she wears her hair completely different. Finally, you can't see her ears in this photo but she does wear small star shaped earrings. Those are occasionally swapped for flower or bee earrings.

Raz mindscape ideas post finally cause I have insomnia

I think it would have a lot more aspects of psychonauts headquarters (or an exaggerated idea of it) than purely circus based

By exaggerated, I mean like. A kind of more stereotypical super cool secret headquarters type vibe, closer to how its probably shown in true psychic tales than in reality.

More superhero-esque than government office

Basically the psychonauts are such a huge part of raz's life n aspirations n shit I can't see how they wouldn't play at least a moderate role in his psyche

Wayyyy more chaotic than in real life. Think bat cave mixed with the back rooms of the tardis.

Area transitions like comic book panels?? Think like that scene in the lucktopus mission where the other interns appear in panels on screen but its used for scene transitions

Since he's so young and unexperienced, I think he'd be a lot more impressionable psyche-wise than your average psychonaut, and therefore every mind he visits would leave SOME kind of trace in his mindscape beyond filing away the baggage n reels

As such I think his brain would be kind of... disjointed? At first glance? Pulling tiny bits of other people's mindscapes and weaving them into his.

Adding onto that, we haven't actually seen what a kids mindscape looks like, and I can't imagine it's as straightforward as an adult mind

A kid's mind is still under construction after all, so I think it would be more prone to frequent changes mindscape-structure-wise, as well as being less generally coherent

You know how kids will like completely swap their entire interests n aspirations because they saw a new movie they liked or some shit?

Yeah. Their mindscapes gonna fluctuate more than an adults

Also like. Kids are straight up just weirder than adults. Theres gonna be some bizarre fucking shit u gotta do to get from place to place

Definitely took a card from millas book in regards to locking up nightmares n other beasties. Probably not as solidly done though

Though I think it'd be neat if there were like. Fake comic books strewn around that r storybook versions of his thoughts on people. They're all illustrated with what looks like raz's own art

Sasha has the most volumes about him lying around, with milla a close runner up, followed by oleander

A lot of Fords volumes have pages ripped out or extra pages stapled to the back. White out over some parts, sticky notes changing dialogue, etc

Theres a lot about his family, and a lot of them contradict eachother. It varies by volume whether they're the heroes or the villains

Egg fuckers volumes reveal raz knows uh, more 'colorful language' than one would presume

Admittedly I haven't thought much about this AU lately, but have everything that comes to mind: (Also, to avoid confusion, Ford Pines and Ford Cruller will be referred to as Ford P and Ford C, respectively)

Gideon Gleeful's amulet was made of Psitanium, based on Ford C's description of the mineral "making psychics more psychic, but also making unstable people more... unstable". Gideon's dad put him on TV as a newborn, so he was already a little unstable. :V

The Pineses and the Aquatos share a common ancestor - Tanya Romanoff, Caryn Pines' mother, who was also a literal fortune-teller that ran with the circus. Fled to America from Grulovia with her husband back in the 20s when the Gzar at the time blamed the Russian Revolution on psychics and tried to have them all rounded up.

Caryn's sister Shprintze returned to Grulovia later to marry circus ringmaster Angelo Aquato, had a son called Lazarus, got divorced and went back to America (whereupon she married and got divorced two more times, but that's another story). Tanya had some latent psychic abilities that she passed down to her descendants, but not nearly as strong as the Galochios'. The majority of them never even realized they had psychic potential at all.

(Brief sidenote - in this AU, the Deluge of Grulovia happened 30 years before the events of Psychonauts, not 20. TBH it just makes more sense to me that way, given the ages of the characters involved and the events that took place during that time gap, and here it has the added bonus of coinciding roughly with Ford P's disastrous portal test. :V)

In the 'present', Dipper Pines & Razputin Aquato, distant cousins, know each other over the internet, whenever Raz can access a computer. They basically never get to see each other in person, for obvious reasons. They mostly swap True Psychic Tales theories and trivia and argue over whether or not magic is real. After Weirdmageddon, Dipper told Raz all about it; Raz's theory was that there was an undocumented Psilirum deposit underneath Gravity Falls that made the town suffer mass hallucinations, and that Bill Cipher was the disembodied astral projection of a powerful psychic with delusions of Godhood.

Mabel Pines' latent powers began to emerge thanks to her contact with Gideon's amulet, combined with being trapped in Cipher's dream-bubble leaving a certain mark on her. Dipper first thought to call Cousin Raz about it after the cops came to their door to complain that someone had been telepathically broadcasting Sevral Timez music all over the neighbourhood. Mabel soon has to go to the Motherlobe when the implications of her psychic awakening come to light. Raz's fellow interns aren't too thrilled about another barely-a-teenager 'psychic curiosity' barging in (and by 'fellow interns' I mean Norma; Gisu and Sam are more like 'finally, I have found my people'). Dipper also gets to meet Raz's family - he and Dion instantly hate each other. Much friendliness and 'friendliness' all around. :V

They later find out that Stan hung around the Psychic Six and helped raise money for them, putting his conmanship to good use. He wasn't considered a proper member of the group, chiefly because his own psychic powers were pretty weak (he could throw a mean Confusion Grenade, though), he didn't live in Green Needle Gulch with the rest of them and had zero interest in participating in their various experiments. He also avoided Otto Mentallis as much as possible (reminded him too much of Ford P, what with his experiments that tend to blow up in his face), and don't even get him started on 'those two hippies that talk to plants'. By contrast, Cassie O'Pia basically became his therapist for a few months; she taught him all about Projection and how he's unwittingly become a master of it, with how many archetypes he has. Unfortunately he had to cut off all contact with them as part of the whole 'faking his death' thing.

Also, at some point, this dialogue happens:

Mabel Pines: "So yeah, an' he kinda worshipped Ford, I guess, but then the whole almost-apocalypse thing happened an' I guess he's looked back at that time an' he's realized ol' Fordy's made some kinda bad decisions an' he might be a doofus? Just a little? So yeah, that's my epic conclusion to my epic mental check-up!"

Hollis Forsythe: "...I'm sorry, you were talking too fast. Were you talking about Mason Pines or Razputin Aquato?"

In a Psychonauts au where the Aquato kids' ages were switched around (oldest is now youngest, youngest is now oldest, raz is dead middle so stays the same)

I think that the family nicknames should have a fruit theme

Just because I think Queepie -> Kiwi is cute

Mirtala being blueberry because mirtillo is blueberry in Italian (correct me if I'm wrong!)

And razberry is also cute

And Augustus can be Pa-paya

So first 3 are easy fruits, I think reaching for the other 2 can be ok just for the theme.

Frazie as either strawberry (fragola) or fig because I think it's cute.

Dion is tricky. Google says watermeal (wolffia globasa) is the tiniest fruit and comes from a type of duckweed plant. Tbh I just wanna keep it as Ducky like some other stories have made up. I think it's cute, maybe a zanotto helped out with that one?

I don't have any actual plot for this concept that I've seen others briefly touch, but I am fond of age swap.
